Take a moment and listen to this powerful song about our Sovereign Sufficient Savior Jesus the Christ. Then read and reflect upon the truths from Revelation 5 below.
Is He Worthy?
Devotion: Dan Robertson
Scripture to Read: Revelation 5
Andrew Peterson’s song “Is He Worthy?” is inspired by Revelation chapter 5.
Revelation 5 doesn’t ask the question, “Is he worthy?” Rather, it asks the question “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” The Apostle John had been given a glorious vision of a sacred scroll sealed with seven seals. However, John began to weep loudly because no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was found worthy to break the seals and open the scroll and to look into it.
Why is this such a problem that it would cause John to weep loudly? For God’s purposes in human history, in the universe, and in the church to be fulfilled, the scrolls must be opened. No one in heaven and on earth is found worthy to open this scroll. Therefore, John’s immediate response was to cry uncontrollably.
In the midst of John’s loud weeping and hot tears came a voice of one of the twenty-four elders saying, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and it’s seven seals.” Jesus is worthy! He is the only one in all of creation found worthy. He is worthy because he was the lamb that was slain and yet stands victorious.
On Easter Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We celebrate “a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain”. Slain and standing. How can this be? Jesus was slain. But why? For his sin? No, for the sins of all those that would believe in him. Jesus is standing. But why? Because God raised him from the dead because his righteous life and sin atoning death was found acceptable to God. So, God resurrected the slain lamb from the dead and he is now standing victorious over sin and death reigning over the universe and history.
Does your sin cause you to mourn? Does the brokenness of this world cause you to weep? Does not knowing what the future will be cause you to despair?
Stop and remind yourself of this: Jesus’ blood is more than sufficient to atone for all my sin. Jesus will make new all that is broken in the world. And Jesus reigns and rules the universe and all things that have been, that is and that will ever be. Is he worthy of all of this? He is!
Reflection Questions:
Why is Jesus the only one worthy to open the seven seals and the scroll in Revelation chapter 5?
Why should knowing that Jesus is worthy and that you are not worthy give you hope today?
Jesus is worthy to stand as Sovereign King over human history. He can also stand before God as our sufficient Savior. How will you pursue joy today in reminded yourself of this reality?
